EMC Power Outages Down to 2,900

As of 3 p.m., Saturday, January 30, the electric membership cooperatives (EMCs) are reporting approximately 2,900 customers without power, down from 5,000 earlier today, largely in Rabun County in north Georgia.

Temperatures in the area remain at or slightly below freezing, causing ice to form on trees which are falling onto power lines. Restoration of service is challenging due to broken power poles in the area which may require working lines to be de-energized for needed repairs.

Officials caution that additional outages could occur late this evening and overnight if temperatures fall below freezing causing further damage to trees and power lines.

However, crews have been brought in from unaffected areas of the state and will continue to clear remaining outages until all electric service has been restored.

Georgia EMC is the statewide trade association representing the state’s 42 EMCs, Oglethorpe Power Corp., Georgia Transmission Corp. and Georgia System Operations Corp. Collectively, Georgia’s customer-owned EMCs provide electricity and related services to more than four million people, nearly half of Georgia’s population, across 73 percent of the state’s land area.
